CLOSE RANGE STRATEGIES

Post  Unit 09 on Sat Aug 11, 2012 9:52 pm

Noob here again guys umm ive been trying out a few ways to help out in team battles and stuff. now because i cant usually communicate as i'd like during battles or in the lobby (because no mic) i havent been able to ask you guys if the stuff i try out works. so i'll just say what some of the things i try are and any suggestions you guys have would be appreciated.

now sometimes what i do as a close range player is wait until most of my team takes their positions and then keep myself unseen until the enemy is close enough and distracted to the extent that i can boost closer and blast him from an angle that gives me advantage if im lucky. sometimes if his AP isnt drained as i thought it would be after consecutive hits. i try my best (while hes distracted) to get behind buildings or so on. if i can i move my attention to another enemy and repeat.

my reason for doing this, is that since im close range theres a chance i'll get hit or at least targeted alot if im lucky enough to avoid damage. thus by repeating this possibly noobish strategy of mine i would have at least damaged a number of the enemy units before my unfortunate end out on the frontline hopefully leaving the rest of the team with less work especially from long range especially if my consecutive hits killed one or two of the enemies.

get back to me okay lemme know. i really like this team and i wanna learn how to be an asset to it

Hi 09,

I may not be the best to answer your questions, but lately I've been experimenting with a close range unit that I like a lot. Your strategy would probably work well as long as the team can hold their own against whoever is attacking them.

What I do is use my mobility and firepower to my advantage. I try to be aggressive and get in real close and engage the enemy in a damage race which I know I can win. I also make sure to back out if it is more than 1v1... The way it works out for me it is part hiding and waiting, but also more jumping from cover to cover until I am in their face. I try to focus on one guy to make a quick clean kill to give the team one less enemy to worry about. Normally I get between 1-2 kills before I die quite early, but I usually leave my team with enough advantage to win after I am gone.

I noticed that you're normally the last one left which isn't necessarily a good thing for a close range unit. So my suggestion is try to be a little more aggressive, but not too aggressive. Still be smart and back down if you know it will end badly for you. It also helps if your team backs you up by giving your enemy some crossfire. One more thing, if you're having trouble causing damage, consider using more powerful/diverse weapons. That will usually solve the problem. For close range, I would recommend a shotgun since they are so powerful as to cause good damage even if the hit is ineffective.

thanks 42,

ive been considering the damage thing too. my main weapons are battle rifle (power) and pmg (power) these have worked wonders for me a number of times especially since i started using ones with a little more range. this is what makes me think sometimes my weapon choice is cool. for instance i built one of my close range mechs with very rounded defense and hes quick for his size, i sort of made him to be able to hold off a tank until i can take cover and get away which worked in a number of matches yesterday. in one of the matches i was playing these guys dont remember what team but i actually won the battle royal after taking on his tank head on (maybe unwise but i got excited) but it worked though wont lie it could also have been luck. but i think the mech clearly did what i built it for.

anyway the point is the damage thing. im considering buying more pmgs and battle rifles and specializing more of them in rapid fire which i havent been doing much of. then i would equip one weapon with rapid fire and the other with power specialization. im hoping this will give me satisfying results??

if so i will equip some of my mechs with a weapon load out like this pmg and battle rifles depending on the situation, but rapid fire and power none the less....

that tip about not being the last one left is a good thought definitely gonna put it into action. have to figure a way to avoid damage a little better. i think my main problem with avoiding damage and incoming enemies is the crappy TV im stuck with when im here in the states. the color and visual is not so awesome especially when im in scan mode.
im getting a new one tomorrow and a mic though so yeah

who are all the close range units on the team by the way?

From what I've seen your mech is quite good. When I've fought you, you usually give my close ranger a run for his money. With the thing about power/rapid fire, I would say definitely keep the power on your PMG because rapid firing it will most likely make it too weak to be as effective as it is now. The battle rifle I am marginal on. I'm assuming you have the UBR (I don't remember off of the top of my head). Rapid firing it will certainly allow you to cause much more damage, but you will lose muzzle velocity, accuracy, and power which could hurt you since rapid fire UBR starts to hit the top of the normal CE defense range. This may make you ineffective a some more of the time. I would recommend trying it out and seeing which you like more.

A few more things I'll suggest:

There is one pair of lighter mid weight legs that I love because they have great load capacity. I use them to allow me to carry 4 weapons and still haul. I can tell you which ones they are when I get on.

You should maybe consider carrying a pile driver for one-hit kills. Or you could use a long range blade if you have difficulty hitting with something like that.

If you are looking at tuning and still pretty new, you should look at the guide I wrote. If you're not doing what I recommend there already, it will save you a lot of time.

As a general idea I think 07, 99, you and 42 are our best close range units thogh I am not entirely positive, some of our team is not even on when I am so it makes it a little difficult to say for sure, 77 runs a decent close range game but I am unfortunately absolutely USELESS when it comes to the close range fight unless the other unit is as slow or slower than I am. But from what I have seen 42 is on the money with how he plays the close range game, and he's right, its absolutely neccisarry to take someone with you, at least one other unit before you die. Sometimes you can't help it though. Tanks for example generally are weaker to KE attacks and so a long to mid range unit (like myself or 77) can just drill a tank into the ground before it can cause too much mayhem so it is not always possible to take one with you but if you follow 42's advice and take covor and draw the enemy to you it shouldnt be too much of an issue. And definitely take advantage of 42's tuning guide because the weapons you have to work with will not cover the damage needed against a good team or even another unit who is as good or better than you.

For the long range blade, grab the Utica and specialize for accuracy.

yes it does i actually just finished reading. i've noticed some of the stuff you mentioned for myself but it was still very helpful. so buying/searching for weapons is almost like playing grab bag? was that what you were explaining in one of the steps? because you were elaborating on purchasing a number of the same weapons for good measure or was i not getting it?

i was also thinking about this boosting issue that was going on with the game. i have an idea but im not sure of how the AP system works or certain other technical things that come into play as far as a faction dominating the map. but i will post something soon and you guys can explain it better to me if what i say is utter non sense. but basically i just think playing completely fair against these cheap players isnt wise but i dont believe in that boosting nonsense. gonna elaborate soon going on the road for a few...

BOOSTING ISSUE

Post  Unit 09 on Sun Aug 12, 2012 2:12 am

im back and first before i say this i have two questions: 1)can a team change its name whenever they feel like it? and 2) can the members of the teams join two separate units once that name is changed to the same as the original unit for instance can you merge teams with a name change? thats probably too much to ask for but even if it cant happen exactly like that thats alright.

i ask this because while this boosting thing is a pain in the ass, i was thinking that a little mysticism could probably help throw these cheaters off guard. im wondering if it would be wise to slightly expand Unknown Unit (of course the leaders would be the ones personally doing this) but the trick would be to not just expand the unit but also make a seemingly separate faction thats under a different name.

now like i said im not so knowledgeable of how this conquest and territory thing goes but to cut this short just in case it is very impossible and cant work so i dont waste my time typing lol i was thinking a separate but smaller unit still under UU could dominate certain regions of the world map, obviously this would take recruiting and hard work so on. Because expansion would no doubt make it hard for the generals and captain to monitor the team the separate branch of UU could be small? but they would be capturing territory under a different name still having the original UU's interest at heart

at a significant interval the seemingly separate faction would have changed its name to UU or just a name a little different but making it obvious that it is UU nonetheless. im not sure if this would be very effective in completing the task of 'world map domination' as the game is designed but in a real war i think it wouldnt be such a bad idea. plus i think it would piss alot of the cheaters off.

of course the difficulty of monitoring the two factions come into play, like filtering trustworthy players and so on which would make me consider outsiders somewhat people who have no political biases or grudges against other players namely UU

i dont know this just came to me. maybe im just sleepy :/
